With 5,000 animals of over 650 species on show, Beijing Zoo is the largest zoo in China and receives more than six million people from home and abroad every year. Now it covers an area of 90 hectares. Beijing Zoo was first built in 1906 and officially given the name in 1955. Since then, large-scale construction has been on the way, which results in an architectural area of eighty thousand square meters by now. Beijing Zoo has built friendly relations with zoos in more than 50 countries and regions and it also houses animals that are given to Chinese government and people as gifts by other countries and celebrities.
