The defeat of the Chinese Imperial forces in the 2nd Opium War (1856-1860) was secured by the final advance on Peking in the summer of 1860. The combined British and French forces re-captured the Taku forts at the mouth of the Pei-Ho river on 21st August and then advanced up-river, finally reaching Peking on 22nd Spetember 1860. With the allies arrival, the Emperor went into exile and the Summer Palace was burnt by the British. ! T5 ^+ b8 f' P
Louis Aubaret commanded the French vessel 'Pregent' in the battle fleet of Admiral Charner. The present maps detail the chronology of the advance of a contingent of French forces from the Taku forts to Yuanmingyuan (The Summer Palace) and the details of all the camps and actions. ) g0 Y% A) D9 U0 _
