The defeat of the Chinese Imperial forces in the 2nd Opium War (1856-1860) was secured by the final advance on Peking in the summer of 1860. The combined British and French forces re-captured the Taku forts at the mouth of the Pei-Ho river on 21st August and then advanced up-river, finally reaching Peking on 22nd Spetember 1860. With the allies arrival, the Emperor went into exile and the Summer Palace was burnt by the British. * f! ?. W ?/ Z+ |! h. v) [1 ]6 g
