<p>草厂东巷，旧称北醋儿胡同，位于北京市东城区鼓楼东大街北侧的草厂胡同东面，明朝属金台坊管界，清朝属镶黄旗辖区。</p>
<p>北京有许多称为草厂或草场的地名，大多得名于明朝驻京军队的军马草料场。明朝洪武元年（1368年）正月，明太祖朱元璋在南京应天府称帝，八月，征虏大将军徐达率军攻占元大都，明太祖将元大都降格为北平府。征虏大将军徐达在进攻元大都之前曾经请示朱元璋，如果元朝皇帝逃往蒙古草原是否要追击，朱元璋回答无须追击，只要固守边境防止元军反攻即可。由于朱元璋在推翻元朝之际并未彻底击溃蒙古军队，致使此后的明朝北方长期遭受蒙古军队侵袭。</p>
<p>洪武三年（1370年），明太祖分封皇子为王，皇四子朱棣受封为燕王。洪武十三年（1380年），燕王朱棣离开南京进驻他的封地北平府。后来燕王朱棣从北平府起兵，攻占南京夺取了侄子建文帝的皇位，于永乐元年（1403年）将北平府升格为北京顺天府，又于永乐十九年（1421年）正式迁都到北京。永乐皇帝迁都北京的动机，一方面是因为他在南京遭受到大批建文帝旧臣的抵制，另一方面也是为了在北京便于就近集结军队防御北方蒙古侵袭，号称“天子守边”。永乐皇帝在迁都北京的前后，曾经五次率军亲征蒙古，因此明朝在北京长期驻守着大量军队。</p>
<p>明朝的军制，将全国各地分为五大军区，分别由设在北京的中军、左军、右军、前军、后军五个都督府统辖，合称为“五军都督府”。现在的人民大会堂一带，过去有中府胡同、前府胡同等地名，就是五军都督府的遗迹。</p>
<p>五军都督府下辖各地的“都指挥使司”，相当于省军区。都指挥使司下辖的“卫指挥使司”，相当于军分区，简称“卫”，每一个卫有官兵5600名。驻守在外地的卫称为外卫，驻守在北京的卫称为京卫。明朝在北京有74个京卫，所以北京城到处都有兵营，例如西城区的机织卫胡同在明朝是济州卫兵营，北魏胡同在明朝是永清左卫兵营，东城区的五道营胡同在明朝是武德卫兵营。这些军队全都配备有军马，需要有养马和贮存草料的地方，所以给北京留下了诸如前马厂、后马厂、马匹厂、养马营等许多涉及马的地名，也留下了大量称为草厂或是草场的地名。</p>
<p>明朝《京师五城坊巷胡同集》记述，金台坊管界有“腾骧四卫”。《明史·职官志》记述，“腾骧四卫”分别是腾骧左卫、腾骧右卫、武骧左卫、武骧右卫，组建于宣德八年（1433年），职责是“直驾、随驾”，也就是为皇帝值班站岗和随行护卫。民国时期的《燕都丛考》记述，草厂胡同有“东西南北四口”，可见这里过去是“腾骧四卫”军马草料场的大院，大院四面都有出口，后来演变为胡同民居。</p>
<p>草厂东巷虽然紧邻草厂胡同，但是与昔日的军马草料场并无关联。草厂东巷旧称北醋儿胡同，过去在南边有南醋儿胡同、中醋儿胡同、西醋儿胡同，在北边有酒醋面局外厂，还有碾儿胡同和锅腔胡同这样听起来与制醋工具相关的地名。这些与醋相关的地名，根源都在地安门内大街东侧的酒醋局胡同，那里是明朝为皇家服务的“四司八局十二监”二十四个衙门之一的酒醋面局所在地。酒醋面局掌管皇家食用的酒、醋、酱、面和豆类的制做加工和供应。1965年北京市整顿地名时，因为称作“醋”的胡同名称太多，容易混淆，遂将北醋儿胡同改称为草厂东巷。</p>
